travisandjonathan ::: Favorites 2007-04-01 00:25:10 How did people have babies before 8 classes were around ? __________________________________________________
mamaramatv ::: Favorites 2007-04-02 11:00:22 That's a good question! Years ago women gave birth at home amongst a team of other women, some were family, some friends, plus one or more midwives. There wasn't a need to do all this prep-work because the woman was in good, instructive hands; chances are she had witnessed a few births herself. Take all that away, put her in a hospital, give her hands-off doctors and no female support and she is thrown far from the natural approach to birthing. __________________________________________________
shinycap ::: Favorites 2007-04-07 14:16:26 I actually don't think that an 8 week class is way too much. I'm sure you can find classes for less. But I think an 8 week class could probably involve a good amount of learning about what labor would be like, practice breathing and other labor techniques, maybe some videos and stuff. I took Lamaze class and I think it was 7 weeks. __________________________________________________
mamaramatv ::: Favorites 2007-04-07 17:19:00 It depends on how much you feel you need to know. Some people are comfortable with a few hours preparation, some want months of prep. A couple might not agree about how much is too much, so it's helpful to consider a balance. __________________________________________________
hopeand ::: Favorites 2007-05-16 17:24:30 Looking back at the childbirth education class experience (yes, we did the full 8 classes-1 1/2 hrs. each), here's my suggestion to first time parents: Hire a childbirth educator to work with you and your partner one-on-one. You'll learn more, and you'll be able to practice the breathing/relaxation techniques to perfection. Good luck to you. __________________________________________________
hopeand ::: Favorites 2007-05-16 17:31:24 A few more thoughts ... consider a doula and/or midwife for the birth. Also, look into hypnobirthing for pain management. After the birth, a postpartum doula can help with breastfeeding instruction and the new family's transition period. __________________________________________________
mamaramatv ::: Favorites 2007-05-16 22:16:31 Yay! That's the job I am working toward: Childbirth Educator. I should be certified within the year. But I'm already certifiable, har. __________________________________________________
lizilizi1 ::: Favorites 2007-11-26 12:39:19 We did Bradley, which is 12 weeks long. I'm a grad student and my husband works full time, so we don't have spare time either. He went from a guy who felt icked out by the word "veins" to someone who understood more about my labor than the nurses did. I don't at ALL think that 8 classes is too much. I do think that people who take those one-day classes are WAY underinformed, unless they already have a lot of birth experience (as would be traditional). __________________________________________________ |

Description: Our extremely gentle 150 lbs bullmastiff is laying right in front of our 5½ months old child. Our son is playing with his toy and our dog is watching carefully, at some point trying to lure the toy out of the babys hand. This might look frightening to some, but the situation is quite harmless. We can read our dog like an open book and we are teaching him not to touch any of our sons stuff this gentle way. |

bysandra ::: Favorites 2007-07-08 16:05:45 That is absolutely adorable. Love the baby's look when the pup is told he can't have the toy. It makes me wish I could go get my Bullmastiff a baby to have as a friend. :o)Great clip! __________________________________________________

preo2 ::: Favorites 2007-07-23 11:29:55 Kudos to you! I'm a dog trainer and i can tell just by your dog's body language that your baby is not in any danger what so ever! Great job! __________________________________________________
Pythoneer ::: Favorites 2007-07-23 12:42:33 Thanks to you all and especially preo2. We have often talked about the body language of our bullmastiff - he is extremely easy to read. His face is so full of expressions, his many wrinkles and big eyes are such storytellers. We can easily tell if he shouldn't be in near vicinity of our son which happens when he is a bit too worked up and wants to play. They are simply great together. Again, thanks for the nice comments! __________________________________________________
