Description:

Main Findings The main findings of our study are: 1. Malicious software running on a single voting machine can steal votes with little if any risk of detection. The malicious software can modify all of the records, audit logs, and counters kept by the voting machine, so that even careful forensic examination of these records will find nothing amiss. We have constructed demonstration software that carries out this vote-stealing attack. 2. Anyone who has physical access to a voting machine, or to a memory card that will later be inserted into a machine, can install said malicious software using a simple method that takes as little as one minute. In practice, poll workers and others often have unsupervised access to the machines. 3. AccuVote-TS machines are susceptible to voting-machine viruse! s - computer viruses that can spread malicious software automatically and invisibly from machine to machine during normal pre- ! and post-election activity. We have constructed a demonstration virus that spreads in this way, installing our demonstration vote-stealing program on every machine it infects. 4. While some of these problems can be eliminated by improving Diebold's software, others cannot be remedied without replacing the machines' hardware. Changes to election procedures would also be required to ensure security.

Vote with a paper absentee ballot and TAKE A PICTURE of it before you send it in!

This is shocking and deeply disturbing. If Diebold can make ATMs which are very secure (and give you a paper receipt), why can't they make a computerized voting machine that is just as secure? I urge all the states that spent millions on these deeply flawed machines to file a class-action lawsuit against Diebold for selling them junk.

What happened to using pen and paper!? All technology is open to hacking.

Well it seems to me that Americans need to return to head counts, I propose we all promote head counts, like areas where people convene according to party where an overhead picture can be taken to show the countries support for either candidate, SURE the secret ballot is no more, but if it means getting a vote, then we have to be open about it.

Pen and Paper is the only acceptable democratic voting procedure with observers from all parties during the whole process.

Yeah, can someone in America do something about this? Thanks

I used to work for Diebold in Canton, Ohio. Let me just tell you...BEWARE of this company! Right before I left the biggest scandal around the company was the fact that Diebold had made numerous large donations with company funds to the Republican party! I will NEVER trust a Diebold machine!

I would like to add that the flaws with this device should be of concern for both Republicans and Democrats because either side could potentially take advantage of it. No matter what your political persuasion you should be concerned about the potential problems with this technology.

These machines (and Sequoa and ES&S) are so hackable that you can walk into a polling booth with you BLACKBERRY and change the election results.

EVERYONE from EVERY PARTY should want clean elections. This is a NON-PARTISAN issue. I am deeply disturbed by those here who are poo pooing this.

This is very depressing. We will have to go back to voting the old way, imo. To make sure everyone's vote is counted properly.

Saw this at tech news earlier today. All it takes is one; doesn't matter which side they're on. Scary thought, that this is what our democracy has boiled down to.

Our founders wrote the Constitution with the aim of protecting people from the Government -- that's why they had all those "checks and balances". These Diebold voting machines are the perfect way to take over America and keep everyone thinking that tney are in a "Democracy".

Why is the machine not programmed to deliver a receipt to the voter (and another for the polling location)? The confirmation screen only assures there has been no user error - program error is still possible.
