How did people have babies before 8 classes were around ?

That's a good question! Years ago women gave birth at home amongst a team of other women, some were family, some friends, plus one or more midwives. There wasn't a need to do all this prep-work because the woman was in good, instructive hands; chances are she had witnessed a few births herself. Take all that away, put her in a hospital, give her hands-off doctors and no female support and she is thrown far from the natural approach to birthing.

I actually don't think that an 8 week class is way too much. I'm sure you can find classes for less. But I think an 8 week class could probably involve a good amount of learning about what labor would be like, practice breathing and other labor techniques, maybe some videos and stuff. I took Lamaze class and I think it was 7 weeks.

It depends on how much you feel you need to know. Some people are comfortable with a few hours preparation, some want months of prep. A couple might not agree about how much is too much, so it's helpful to consider a balance.

Looking back at the childbirth education class experience (yes, we did the full 8 classes-1 1/2 hrs. each), here's my suggestion to first time parents: Hire a childbirth educator to work with you and your partner one-on-one. You'll learn more, and you'll be able to practice the breathing/relaxation techniques to perfection. Good luck to you.

A few more thoughts ... consider a doula and/or midwife for the birth. Also, look into hypnobirthing for pain management. After the birth, a postpartum doula can help with breastfeeding instruction and the new family's transition period.

Yay! That's the job I am working toward: Childbirth Educator. I should be certified within the year. But I'm already certifiable, har.

We did Bradley, which is 12 weeks long. I'm a grad student and my husband works full time, so we don't have spare time either. He went from a guy who felt icked out by the word "veins" to someone who understood more about my labor than the nurses did. I don't at ALL think that 8 classes is too much. I do think that people who take those one-day classes are WAY underinformed, unless they already have a lot of birth experience (as would be traditional).
